Description

6 x Thureophoroi

After the age of the hoplites and before the rise of Rome, the Greek world saw the emergence of the Thureophoroi. These adaptable warriors appeared in the 3rd century BC, during a time when armies needed soldiers who could do more than just fight in rigid formations.

Armed with the distinctive oval thureos shield (inspired by Celtic designs), javelins, a long thrusting spear, and a sword, the Thureophoroi were built for flexibility. They could skirmish at range, form a solid shield wall in battle, or drive off enemy cavalry, making them the perfect link between the dense phalanx of pikemen and the fast-moving cavalry wings.

Their versatility made them invaluable. They were used not only on the battlefield but also as border guards, garrison troops, and raiders in rough terrain where heavy infantry struggled. Kings like Philip V of Macedon and Antiochus of the Seleucid Empire deployed them in swift-moving strike forces, leaving slower troops behind as these warriors stormed towns and seized key ground.

The Thureophoroi remained a key part of Hellenistic armies until the 1st century BC, when the unstoppable Roman legions swept aside the last of the Greek successor states. They represent a fascinating moment in military history, the soldiers of a world caught between Classical Greece and Imperial Rome.

  • There are trumpet and standard bearer arms for you to make your command figures.
  • Every figure can be armed with javelins but here are also 36 sword arms in the set also.
  • There are 6 Long thrusting spear options held in the left shield hand, enough for all figures in the set. If you do want to arm your Thurephoroi with thrusting spears in the right hand you can use them from the Greek hoplite set which has plenty of extras.
  • There are heads wearing various helmet styles of the Hellenistic period and some with interchangeable crests.
  • All 6 figures can be supplied with a cloak.
  • There are 6 oval Thureos shields in 3 different shapes.

Extra Large Lawn Darts, anyone?

I bought this sprue of Victrix Thureophoroi for Warriors of Athena. A lot of great bitz for a Javileneer. There’s also a lot of useful bitz for customization of your Warriors of Athena companions.

A Good Goblin Sprue

A Good Goblin Sprue. I see a lot of potential for Goblins, or Dregs characters like Golem from Lord of the Rings. This sprue is for Oathmark a rank and flank style game, so you get variations of the same or similar weapons. I would recommend to anyone who wants to make Goblins that are more gritty than silly.

Dual use cavalry bases

These work great with minis with integral puddle bases.

Plastic Cobblestone

It's frustratingly hard to find sculpted plastic bases, and these work great! There are tons of great options in this age of 3d printers, but I much prefer plactic so I can use cement to attach pllastic miniatures.

One small negative, the details are a little on the soft side. But given how few alternatives exist, and the very fair price, that's a minor complaint. And they actually paint up better than I expected.

Incredible Sprue

I've been using this sprue a lot for my Forbidden Psalm: Last War group. You receive a plethora of gas mask heads that could be useful for many games.

Great for terrain too

Obviously great for miniatures, but they are also fantastic for adding character to terrain. Get a couple of sprues for multiple uses.

Assemble the levy

Great levy sprue. Can make bow men, assorted peasant rabble, with two handed improvised weapons, slings, or spearman if you pick up a long weapons sprue. Great details and head selection.
